Significance of Goddess Lakshmi in Diwali is the goddess of wealth and prosperity in Hinduism. Therefore, she is praised and worshipped to bring in success, fame, and happiness into every individual’s life. The word Lakshmi is derived from Sanskrit word “Laksya” which means “goal”. Therefore, one who practices a virtuous life is believed to be blessed by Goddess Lakshmi who helps the person find the right path in life. She is also known as the female supreme being called “Shri” or “Mahalakshmi”.

According to puranas, Goddess Lakshmi emerged during the churning of the nectar by the Gods and Demons. She symbolises love & purity and therefore, chose Vishnu (The supreme being) as her consort. Goddess Lakshmi had always accompanied God Vishnu during all his incarnations. It is also believed that if one worships God Vishnu, Goddess Lakshmi always accompanies him.

Sri one of the names of Goddess Mahalakshmi is widely used as an auspicious symbol which evokes grace and abundance. Goddess Mahalakshmi is often depicted  with hands sitting or standing on lotus. Gold leaves and gems of varied hues are used in selected areas like pillars, arches, thrones, dresses, etc. The shine and glean of the gold leaves used by the Thanjavur style paintings last forever. Finally, colours are applied on the sketch. Standard wooden frame is used to house the paintings.
